The Mobility Orientation Law mandates the implementation of these zones to <strong>combat air pollution in urban environments,<\/strong>particularly that caused by diesel vehicles.<\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5); color: var(--ast-global-color-3);\">According to a study by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.santepubliquefrance.fr\/determinants-de-sante\/pollution-et-sante\/air\/articles\/pollution-atmospherique-quels-sont-les-risques#:~:text=Ce%20risque%20a%20ensuite%20%C3%A9t%C3%A9,mois%20d'esp%C3%A9rance%20de%20vie.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Public Health France<\/a>, outdoor air pollution is currently responsible <strong>for 48,000 deaths<\/strong> per year in France.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5); color: var(--ast-global-color-3);\">ZFE-m are established <strong>if air quality standards are not met or for any agglomeration with more than 150,000 inhabitants<\/strong>. In France, more <strong>than 43 cities<\/strong> are affected by ZFE.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5); color: var(--ast-global-color-3);\">Local authorities are tasked with implementing LEZs in their territories based on national directives. These local authorities are free to impose a stricter timetable than that set by the state. <strong>This is also why the traffic rules are not identical from one LEZ to another.<\/strong>For example, the LEZ in Grenoble-Alpes M\u00e9tropole currently only applies to utility vehicles, whereas the Greater Paris Metropolitan Area has decided to impose restrictions on private vehicles five days a week.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5); color: var(--ast-global-color-3);\">These restrictions mainly affect older and more polluting vehicles based on vehicle classification, a system known as Crit\u2019Air stickers. First, diesel vehicles <strong>emit fine particles as well as nitrogen oxides (NOx),<\/strong>which are particularly harmful to human health. They can cause respiratory problems, increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and raise the likelihood of premature mortality. By banning diesel in cities, we can significantly reduce the amount of fine particles in the air as well as NOx emissions and improve the air quality breathed by residents.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9e990ba elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9e990ba\" class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zonefaiblesemissionsmetropolitaine.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Greater Paris Metropolitan Area (Grand Paris)<\/a> announces a ban on diesel traffic starting from 2024.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grenoblealpesmetropole.fr\/546-circuler-dans-la-zone-a-faibles-emissions-zfe.htm#:~:text=L'interdiction%20de%20stationnement%20et,Air%202%20sera%20%C3%A9galement%20interdite.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grenoble-Alps Metropolitan Area<\/a> announces this ban for professionals starting from 2025.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/zfe.grandlyon.com\/professionnel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Greater Lyon Metropolitan Area (Grand Lyon)<\/a> aims to completely ban diesel from 2026.<\/li><li>Other metropolises are also considering this ban, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/zfe.strasbourg.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Eurometropolis of Strasbourg<\/a> for 2028.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-56bc6e9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"56bc6e9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div (ZFE-m)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-723ac7f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"723ac7f\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div businesses<\/strong> if they have to replace their fleet with new low-carbon vehicles. Moreover, it remains an ecological contradiction not to preserve the lifespan of existing vehicles and to recommend purchasing new ones.<\/p><p>However, there is an interesting alternative to new electric or clean vehicles : <strong>electric retrofitting.<\/strong>This involves converting a thermal (gasoline or diesel) vehicle into an electric one. <a href=\"https:\/\/librairie.ademe.fr\/mobilite-et-transport\/4590-etude-retrofit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to a study by ADEME,<\/a>electric retrofitting can be twice as environmentally friendly as purchasing a new electric or clean vehicle because it allows for the reuse of an existing vehicle rather than producing a new one, which has a lesser impact on the environment. The pre-COVID production capacity of automobile manufacturers allows for a replacement of the vehicle fleet by only 5% per year.
